I first met the speakeasy clients at their home in Denver. Their house was beautiful and historic, with old brick walls and vintage light fixtures.
Like every project, we began our work with a questionnaire where I found out more about our clients and what they were looking for. Here, I learned about the couple’s years living in London and hanging out in pubs. They showed me incredible vintage black and white photographs of their family. As I toured the house, I was impressed by this client’s keen eye for art and one-of-a-kind style. The rooms were tastefully decorated with beautiful paintings and coffee table books, including one showcasing their favorite photographer, Ansel Adams. Their powder and laundry room, however, didn’t match their spunky style.
Once I learned more about these clients, I knew we had to make their bathroom something truly one of a kind.
Together, we’d turn the powder and laundry room into a speakeasy that could transport them back to London whenever they needed an escape.
The design for the bathroom came to life when we found a beautiful woven, textured wallpaper with cocktail glasses. Once we had the wallpaper, we found a perfect floating vanity that complimented the vintage feel of the room while bringing in a modern and practical touch. Floating vanities are great options for families with young kids, like this client. Stools can be easily stashed under floating vanities to keep rooms looking sleek for guests. Gold finishes on the sink and mirror tied the powder room together.
Now, onto our biggest challenge, the laundry room.
In the laundry room, we had to find a way to incorporate the top-loading washer and dryer into the vintage design. For a few days, we sketched and experimented with options to conceal the washers when they weren’t in use. We cracked the code by designing a fully functional built-in where the top-loader and front-loader are accessible, but elegant. When not in use, this piece transforms into a stunning bar, elevating the speakeasy energy of the space. Though the concept sounds complex, in practice it is very user-friendly, easy to use and maintain.
The finishing touches were icing on the cake.
Because everything in the room was going to be dark, we opted for a high gloss ceiling that reflected light and brightened up the speakeasy. We framed and hung the black and white photographs of their family, which perfectly complemented the vintage style of the room. We found the art books that weren’t already stored on her shelves and tucked them into the built-in. One of our favorite touches was an Ansel Adams photograph we found and framed. Our clients were honored to see something they cherished showcased in their new space.
At One of a Kind Interior Design, we specialize in bold, unique designs tailored to our clients’ lifestyles. For this project, we delivered a truly unique powder and laundry room that captured our clients’ spunk. We can’t wait to hear what their guests have to say about it at their first cocktail party.
