My family and I are huge Colorado sports fans. On any given weekend throughout the year you can find us cheering for the Denver Summit, rooting for the Broncos, or watching the Nuggets. Though we’re sad the World Cup is over, the Denver Summit and Bronco’s seasons are right around the corner. Our watch parties are just getting started!
Many of our clients at One of a Kind Interior Design ask us to help them design a space fit for entertaining. Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about how to design watch-party-ready living rooms, kitchens and more.
So how can you turn your home into the watch party house that’s the envy of your neighborhood? We have a few ideas.
Ambiance is everything. Whether you’re hosting a watch party with friends or a movie night with your family, intentional lighting elevates any viewing experience. Consider switching out bright lights and cooler tones for something warmer and more ambient. For the movie buffs, I often recommend investing in a media center that serves as a gathering and focal point for a living area. When the TV is in use, I like to add a backlight to turn their living room into a theatre for the whole family to enjoy. When it’s not, I get creative with ways to hide TVs—integrating art, cabinets or curtains for when the tech is not in use.
Get comfortable. Many of our favorite movies and sports games last well over two hours. If you’re hosting the watch party, it’s essential that you have enough seating for all your guests to sit back and settle in. Opt for comfortable couches and seating with performance fabric that can withstand food stains and beer spills. It’s tempting to pick the biggest, plushest couch you can find, but don’t forget to be strategic about the furniture you bring into your space. A good rule of thumb for creating ample walking space for guests is to ensure two people can comfortably move in between pieces of furniture. Being proactive about the space in your room will ensure comfort and good traffic flow for all of your guests.
We can’t forget the kitchen. No matter what’s on the TV, people love to congregate in the kitchen. Over the last several years, open concept layouts for kitchens—and many living spaces–have become increasingly popular. This layout is great for entertaining due to its ability to expand spaces, providing more room for movement and gathering throughout a home. However, open concept living plans are not always conducive to entertaining. Why? Because sound carries! With less furniture and fewer walls to soften the acoustics of a room comes less of an ability to absorb sound. It’s important to strike a balance between open concept and acoustic support. Consider adding rugs and artwork to your space to make sound carry less. For some clients, we recommend integrating a sound system throughout their home to add white noise, music or sports commentary to the function.
