Do you know about the trend trap? It’s that thing that happens when you’re on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or Pinterest and you see the same thing so much that you start to really like it. You get trapped. The next thing you know you’re walking through Target spending $30 on a shirt that everybody already has.
That’s what I like to call the trend trap.
It can happen to anyone, about anything. Maybe it’s a clothing trend. Maybe it’s a dance trend. Maybe it’s even a water bottle trend. I’m looking at you Coloradans.
I see it all the time in interior design. People spend thousands of dollars renovating kitchens to fit within the same trend that they’ve seen on Instagrams and magazine covers time and time again.
At One of a Kind Interior Design, I like to encourage my clients to avoid the trend trap and invest in interior design that will last beyond a trend cycle.
Here’s why we avoid the trend trap:
We should celebrate our individuality
Each of us brings something unique and wonderful into the world. I believe we should surround ourselves and fill our homes with interior design that celebrates that individuality. When I’m working with my clients, I spend time learning their likes, dislikes, hobbies and stories. I get to know them as the one of a kind individual they are. Once we’ve gotten to know each other, I select a few words, or “values”, that captures the clients’ individuality and informs the design choices we make as a team.
Designing based on this set of values allows us to create a space that represents and celebrates the style and specific needs of the client.
Trends can get expensive
Trends don’t always last. Remember that pair of jeans you bought in the 90s, wore for a year, and never saw again? Don’t start a design project that stays in the back of your dresser for 10 years.
If the foundation of your interior design inspiration is based on a trend, it’s possible that you’ll get tired of the concept you invested a lot of money in. When I work with clients, it’s important that they spend their money wisely. Invest in interior design that will last long beyond the Tik Tok trend cycle. It’ll save you money in the long run.
Create something that you’ll be proud to show off
You know the saying that goes, “In a sea of black swans, be a flamingo”. Or is it, “In a sea of flamingos, be a pigeon”? Whatever it is, why follow a trend when you have a one of a kind sense of style inside of you?
I am passionate about reflecting my client’s unique story and personality in their space, while giving them the confidence to follow their own design inspiration.
