It was no secret that this client was fabulous. From our very first consultation, this client’s positivity, vibrancy and creativity were contagious. Her first-floor bathroom design, however, lacked all the qualities that made her so wonderfully unique.

That’s why she partnered with us, the team at One of a Kind Interior Design (OKID).
After a hard few years, our client was feeling healthy and strong for the first time in a while. Her life reflected that, her calendar was busy and her social life was bustling. She had purchased a home as a place to unwind from her busy calendar and welcome people into her joy.
She hired OKID to design a first-floor bathroom that she’d be proud to show off. When we came in for our first consultation, I was taken by all the beautiful art and vibrant colors featured throughout her home. Green is her favorite color, and you could see it in the beautiful touches throughout her home — specifically in the color block painting she hung in her living room.
The bathroom she hired us to help fix, however, lacked all of the flare that made her style so captivating. It was drab and buildergrade, without any of the color or beautiful art that she sprinkled through the rest of the house.
Our job? Turn this bathroom from cookie cutter to an “Artist’s Bathroom” like no other.
I started the project by searching for a tile that would mimic the green color block painting in her living area. Though our budget was practical, we decided that the tile would be the place to splurge. A few days of searching and voila! I found a tile color and style that mimicked the art piece perfectly. This beautiful tile would be the centerpiece and focal point of the bathroom.

Once the tile got delivered, things started to get complicated. As I ran through the finishing touches in our layout meeting, I noticed that the tile color wasn’t quite right. We were hoping for the tile to be a bright green, but the one in front of us was muted. If this was the focal point of the room and design element we were splurging on, it had to be perfect.
After regrouping with the tile company, we identified a solution. We’d try out another tile for no additional cost. This new tile was closer to the bold green we were looking for, but the shape was irregular and the texture was unique. This meant that we’d have to try out a different design for the tile in the shower than the one we had initially planned.
Based on our client’s style, I drew out a few different shapes for the tile design. The new designs were bolder, but our client — the artist that she is— loved them. Problem solved.
With the shower tile laid, it was time to add artistic touches to the rest of the room. We kept the original bathtub, but modernized the space by adding a glass panel so the tile would be visible without having to add a shower curtain. To bring more light to the space, we replaced the bathroom fan with a newer version that had a light in it. This brought some subtle brightness into the space while avoiding the extra construction costs associated with rewiring electrical for recessed lighting or additional light fixtures. We updated the vanity with a new countertop vessel yellow sink and black fixtures.
During our initial consultation, our client had mentioned how much she liked the chic lofty look of cement floors. Though a full cement floor would be out of our budget, we found a beautiful floor tile that mimicked the chic effect of cement. It featured fun geometric patterns that tied the room together.
Now, for the finishing touches.

Our client had a variety of art all over the house. She kept pieces that she didn’t know what to do with, including a fun collection of female figure paintings, in her basement. She couldn’t find the right place to hang the paintings the way she felt they should be showcased.
We decided that the bathroom would be a private place to discreetly showcase the paintings in a relevant setting. We called this new gallery wall, “The Naked Lady Wall.” When the pieces were hung, it tied the room together perfectly — bringing together all the colors and art she loved so much.
At the end of the project, our client felt like the bathroom perfectly captured her style. She raves about the compliments she receives every time company comes over. She’s happy she gets to enjoy her space now that she’s healthy. It’s given her a new appreciation for her surroundings and how important it is to enjoy them.
Projects like these are some of the most fulfilling for our team. It’s a privilege to help someone as kind, optimistic and artful as this client to create a space that reflects her unique brilliance.
Thank you to this client for partnering with us to turn your space from cookie cutter to like no other!
